Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
